Now that the weather is warm again, we’re enjoying refreshing cocktails with our Mexican food. The most popular cocktails to enjoy at a Mexican restaurant are probably margaritas, but there are plenty of other options. Another tequila cocktail that is a refreshing complement to a plate of Mexican food is the Paloma. This cocktail gets its primary flavor from grapefruit, an underappreciated citrus. Next time you visit Monarquia for tasty Mexican food and a refreshing drink, try something new and order a Paloma. It’s a simple cocktail and easy to make yourself if you prefer to try it at home first.
Try a new drink with your Mexican food. Here’s a brief history of the Paloma, plus a simple recipe to make one yourself.
Origins of the Paloma
The origins of the Paloma cocktail are somewhat murky. However, it was most likely created in the 1950s by Don Javier Delgado Corona, the owner of La Capilla bar in Guadalajara, Mexico. The story goes that Corona was inspired by the classic margarita but wanted to create a more refreshing and thirst-quenching cocktail. Using a simple combination of tequila, grapefruit soda, and lime juice, he created a light, sweet, and refreshing cocktail to rival the margarita. Like the margarita, the Paloma traditionally has a salted rim, which complements the sweetness of the grapefruit.
Simple Paloma Recipe
Ingredients
- 2 ounces tequila
- 4 ounces of grapefruit soda or grapefruit juice and sparkling water
- 1 ounce lime juice
- Lime wedge for garnish
- Salt for the rim (optional)
Instructions
Rub a lime wedge around the rim of a highball glass. Put some salt on a dish and press the rim of the glass into the salt so it sticks to the lime juice. Fill the glass with ice, and then add the tequila, grapefruit soda (or juice and sparkling water), and lime juice. Stir the drink gently to combine the ingredients. Garnish your drink with a lime wedge, and enjoy!
