The margarita is a classic cocktail that many have enjoyed for decades. Its origins can be traced back to the 1940s when it first became popular in the United States. However, the true origins of the margarita are a bit of a mystery, with several different stories circulating about its creation. Either way, here at Monarquia, we’re gearing up to celebrate this timeless drink with our customers on February 22nd!
In honor of National Margarita Day, our family at Monarquia is delving into this customer favorite. The past, the trends, and the several variations!
Tale One
One of the most popular stories about the margarita’s origins is that it was invented by a bartender named Carlos Herrera in Tijuana, Mexico, in the 1930s. Herrera is said to have created the drink for a customer. Her name was Margarita Sames, who was a socialite and frequent customer at his bar. The drink was a hit with Sames and her friends and soon became a staple at the bar.
Tale Two
Of course, finding the exact origin of any drink or meal can be tricky. Another story about the margarita’s origins is that it was created by a bartender in Acapulco, Mexico, in the 1940s. According to this story, the bartender was experimenting with different ingredients. They then came up with the combination of tequila, lime, and triple sec, now known as the margarita.
Traveling across the border.
Despite the different stories about its origins, the margarita quickly became a popular drink in the United States in the 1940s and 1950s. It first trended in Texas and California with the freshly combined ingredients and salt-rimmed glass. The margarita’s popularity continued to grow in the 1960s and 1970s. And it’s now considered one of the most popular cocktails in the world!
Today, the margarita is typically made with tequila, lime juice, and triple sec. However, there are many variations of the drink. This includes frozen margaritas made with crushed ice, and flavored margaritas, made with different types of fruits or syrups. From salt rims to sugar rims – or perhaps no rim at all – this is one of the most popular and customizable drinks in the world!
