Amherst lunch

Are you hungry for lunch but can decide on what you want? Why don’t you give El Arroyo a try! El Arroyo Mexican Restaurant was built from a passion for excellent and authentic Mexican cuisine. Since 2018, we have rapidly grown to be the go-to Amherst lunch spot as well as stopping by during dinner. Here are just a few of the items that we offer on our lunch menu!

Chilaquiles

Served during both breakfast and lunch in Mexico, chilaquiles are dated back centuries to the early Aztecs. The word chilaquiles comes from the Nahuatl language with the basic meaning of “chili and greens.” We make our chilaquiles with green or red sauce, your choice of chicken or beef, and is topped off with guacamole and sour cream.

Enchiladas

Enchiladas date back to the centuries of the Mayans. Initially, the enchilada was named Tlaxcala and was just an empty corn tortilla dipped in chili sauce. Now, we make our enchiladas with your choice of chicken or beef and a red or green sauce. In addition, it is served with a side of rice and beans.

Chimichanga

When the chimichanga was made, it was in the northern state of Mexico called Sonora. However, since then, part of the state had been claimed as U.S. territory and was added as an expansion of Arizona. Two restaurants named El Charro and Macayo fight over who made the chimichanga first. We make ours with soft or fried chicken or beef which is then served with a side of rice, beans, and guacamole.

Fajitas

While Texans may like to try taking claim for creating the fajita, it really belongs to Mexican ranch workers living next to the border. The word faja means “strip” or “belt.” When cows would go under the knife by the ranch workers who would take the “throwaway items” such as hide and meat trimmings as payment for their labor. Those meat trimmings would then go into making some of the first fajitas. Today, we make our fajitas with your choice of chicken, beef, steak, or fish which would then be served with a side of rice and beans.
